Mountain School

Hello 5th Grade Families,

This week you received a packet from your teacher with important Mt. School information in it.  Three forms need to be signed and returned by Thursday, May 1st:

  1. 1.       Mountain School Participant Information and Release Form
  2. 2.       Bellingham School District Mountain  School Trip Release Form
  3. 3.       Accident Insurance Verification

PLEASE NOTE: The original dates you were given may be different from what you see on the packet.  Your class will be going on the dates listed on the packet you receive, either June 2 – 4th or 4th – 6th.

Chaperone Information:

Chaperones are being selected from the lottery pool by your child’s teacher.  Those selected will be contacted by the teacher before the Mt. School Meeting on April 29th.

Mountain School Meeting:

There will be an informational meeting held on Tuesday, April 29th at 6:30 pm in the Silver Beach Library.  Codi Hamblin, from the North Cascades Institute, will be giving a presentation about the program and a meeting for all chaperones will take place after that.

Use of Funds Raised:

We owe a huge thank you to the many of you who have volunteered your time and efforts this year for various fundraising activities for our 5th graders. That money is being put to great use in the following ways:

T-shirts for each 5th grader with be printed with two designs, one front and back, chosen from a 5th grade art design project

Disposable cameras, one per student, to be taken to Mt. School

Memory Books for our 5th graders

                5th Grade Picnic Supplies

None of these things could have happened without your generous support.  Thank You!

Hello 5th Grade Families,

On the evening of the Silver Beach School Dance, February 7th from 6 – 9 pm, we will be selling Menchies frozen yogurt in small, prepackaged containers. There will be tickets sold at the door that will be used for the frozen yogurt, so you won’t need to worry about handling or counting any cash.

We will need four volunteers for the following shifts:

5:45 – 7:15 (2 people)

Set up table as needed and stock coolers by table for easy access.

Take tickets for yogurt and keep coolers filled.  Excess will be kept in kitchen freezer.

7:15 – 9:00 (2 people)

Take tickets for yogurt and count all tickets at the end of the evening.

Piece of cake!  Please contact either of us if you are interested.  Remember, you’ll get an extra lottery ticket toward the Mt. School Chaperone pool if you participate.

Thanks so much,

Jen Aldrich

Dear 5th Grade Families,

We wanted to provide you with an update on Mt. School information and where we stand with fundraising.

The Fall Festival, Movie Night/Pizza Feed and Poinsettia and Coffee Sales events together raised close to $2400.00 for our 5th grade students!  Thank you so much to all of you who participated or headed up each event. We will have one final fundraising event that you will have a chance to participate in if you have not already done so.  That will be the school dance that I believe is held in February.  More details to come as the date gets closer.

We’ve had a few questions from parents that I’m sure many of you also have, so we have addressed them below:

What are we doing with the funds raised?

We are definitely doing t-shirts for all the students and will coordinate with the 5th grade teachers to determine the best use of the remaining funds.

How does the lottery ticket/chaperone situation work?

Each parent who would like the opportunity to go to Mountain School as a chaperone will have their name entered into a lottery drawing.  For each fundraising event that you participate in, you earn an extra ticket.  If you lead a fundraising event, you earn two extra tickets instead of one.

A form will be sent out as the dates get closer, asking if you would like to be a chaperone and which fundraising events you participated in, if any.  These entries will be handled as described above.  As of now, we are allowed 3 chaperones per classroom.

What are the dates our classes are going to Mountain School

Session A: June 2-4, 2014 (Mon-Wed) – Mrs. Williams class will attend this session.

Session B: June 4-6, 2014 (Wed-Fri) – Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Alexanders classes will attend this session.

Why don’t all the classes go together at the same time?

This is a matter of space at the facility. They simply don’t have room for all three classes to go together.

Will there be an informational meeting for parents as the dates gets closer?

Yes, someone from Mt. School will come to Silver Beach to talk about the program and address any remaining questions from parents.

We will keep the website updated with the latest information but you can always feel free to contact either Amy Burghart or me if you have any questions.

Thanks so much,

Jen Aldrich

Dear 5th Grade Parents,

On Monday we held our first Mt. School Informational Meeting in the school library.  It was nice to see such a large turnout.  For those of you who were unable to attend, the purpose of the meeting was to introduce/explain what Mt. School is, and to discuss fundraising opportunities.

What is Mt. School – An award winning environment education program provided through the North Cascades Institute for 5th grade students throughout Bellingham. For some students, first time away from home or in a rustic outdoor environment. Wonderful staff, facilities and organic local food. For more detailed information, visit their website here -

Dates our 5th Graders will attend – The week of June 2 – 6, 2014.  Students will either go Monday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Friday that week.  Two groups will go during one part of the week and one group will go during the other.  Distribution has yet to be determined.

Costs – The school district is covering the costs this year, including chaperones.

Chaperones – Total number of parent chaperones permitted is 10.  Selection will be on a lottery basis.  Details to be determined.

Fundraising – Why fundraise if the program is paid for?

  1. To give the students a sense of involvement and contribution
  2. Add to budget for Track Meet or 5th Grade Picnic
  3. Memorabilia (examples)

    a.        Mt. School T-Shirt that may also have a tie in with the Track Meet

    b.       Memory Book / Year Book

             c.        Warm Beanie (for use at Mt. School)

Fundraising Ideas Presented:

  • Cake Walk – Friday, October 18th during the Fall Festival.  Contact Jodi Haggen for details or to volunteer for this event.
  • Pizza Feed – to tie in with the first Movie Night – tentatively Nov. 16th
  • Garage Sale – Spring event
  • Menchies participation – Dayna Penney, owner of Menchies and a SB parent, has volunteered to donate a portion of proceeds from the event we choose.  Tentatively thinking the Silver Beach Dance that will be held in February.
  • Gift Cards
  • Poinsettia Sales / Coffee Sales – Ideas pending approval
  • Wrapping Paper Sales

Fundraising Process – If you have any fundraising ideas that you would like to either spearhead or volunteer for, please  contact Jen Aldrich or Amy Burghart .
